About Picton Press/FAQ

Picton Press distributes many NEHGS titles. When you order books online, you may be directed to Picton's website.

Picton Press is a publishing company located in the beautiful picturesque town of Rockland, Maine which specializes in publishing genealogical and historical manuscripts, whether long out of print or never published before. We particularly seek transcripts of original church records, tax lists, court records, town vital records, tombstone inscriptions and early military records, and thus in doing so are emphasizing research tools. We specialize in genealogical and historical research material of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries tracing descendants of early immigrants.

Picton Press has been a publisher of genealogical and historical research material for over 35 years having first published the book The History of Bridgton, Maine in 1968 under our New England History Press imprint. There have been many changes on the genealogical scene over the past years; available sources have expanded greatly, standards of scholarship have improved, and American's interest in their ancestry has expanded greatly. But the importance of the highest standards of research and the need for intellectual honesty remain unchanged. We will continue to bring you both quality and honesty in the future as we have in the past.

FAQ about Picton Press

Why are you selling books through Picton Press instead of doing it yourself?

In our quest to offer members and customers the best service possible, NEHGS is excited to name Picton Press our exclusive distributor, due in great part to the increase in the number of titles that will now be available for sale to our patrons. Picton Press has over 30 years of experience selling genealogical books and products. Transferring distribution to Picton will allow current NEHGS staff to concentrate on other aspects of customer service and provide even more member services than we are currently able to offer. The NEHGS Sales department will continue to handle all orders for The Great Migration books, as well as orders from our Special Orders catalog.

What will I be able to buy at Picton Press?

You will be able purchase all NEHGS books and CD-ROMS and Newbury Street Press publications from Picton Press except those in The Great Migration series. In addition, patrons will have access to the many additional titles that Picton Press carries in their catalogue. As new NEHGS titles are made available they will be sold through Picton Press. And like in the NEHGS store, when books become “out of print” or sell poorly they may be dropped by Picton Press.

Why are you still selling some of your books and not others?

The Great Migration series is a long-term and complex project that involves both the series of books and a newsletter, which is available by subscription only. We feel the NEHGS staff will be best able to answer questions and service customers of that series. Special Orders are single reproduction copies of out-of-print books. In both cases we felt NEHGS would be the more logical vendor.

How will I purchase books from NEHGS now?

You will purchase The Great Migration Series and Special Orders books the same ways you have in the past; we will take online orders on our website, we accept telephone or fax orders, and we accept mail orders.

How do I order books from Picton Press?

Picton Press will take your orders via email, by phone, by fax, or through the mail.
