Access Policy

NEHGS adheres to the American Library Association - Society of American Archivists joint statement on access to original research materials in libraries, archives, and manuscript repositories as well as the Society of American Archivists Code of Ethics for Archivists.

The collections are available to members of NEHGS. All material is available during normal library hours of operation under the following provisions:

• Unprocessed collections are not available to patrons. If the answer to a specific query can likely be found in part of an unprocessed collection, that portion may be made available at the discretion of the archivist.
  
• Members at a distance wishing to access information in the manuscript collections may contact  the Research Services Department for assistance.
  
• All manuscript material is maintained in a secure, archival area. Members need to request materials by completing a manuscript request form (available at the reference desk on the 6th floor and floor 5A).
  
• Items will be paged as quickly as possible.

A researcher can find a manuscript's call number by looking at the catalog record. A full online catalog of manuscripts is under way and will be available as soon as possible. Check our manuscript catalog for a complete list of entries to date.

Finding Aids to Manuscript Collections
Inventories exist for many of our larger collections. These finding aids provide a detailed description of the collection's contents. The catalog record will note if there is an inventory for that collection.
